Photography Podcast

Branching Out

Posted in General on 07-07-2010 | 5 Comments

Up until now, we’ve used the PhotoNetCast site mainly to announce new shows and offer links and other material that are not easy to provide in the audio stream. Moving on, however, we’re really keen to start posting occasional technical articles and reviews too. This brings up the question, however, of what our listeners are interested in reading about. We have a few articles lined up already but please let us know what you would like to read here by leaving us some suggestions in the comments. Just to get the ball rolling, here are a few high level categories that may spark some ideas:

  • Basic photography concepts – camera controls, exposure, focusing, white balance.
  • Advanced exposure control – when to ignore the meter and using histograms to best effect.
  • Rules of composition – using them and breaking them.
  • Photo correction and post-processing techniques.
  • Camera raw adjustments.
  • Lightroom workflow.
  • Night and low light photography.
  • Photography book reviews.
  • Software package reviews.

Let us know your thoughts and suggestions!

I like all your ideas except Lightroom as I don’t use it. All those other topics would be great. Light painting would be another great one and talking about flash at a very deep level would be fantastic. Great shows guys. I have heard them all and look forward to each one.

I have listened to various photo related podcasts, but the only podcast that I now subscribe to is PhotoNetCast, and the reason for that is that I really like your content above the other offerings.

I enjoy the human interest in your podcasts, i.e. listening to the experiences of other photographers, because there is a lot to learn from that. If I want to know how to do something technical or know more about a lens, I only have to google and will most properly get the information I’m looking for in the first results page. What is however more difficult to get hold of is the real life experiences from other photographers.

In any case keep up the god work.

Regards

Lino

i love the photography stuff, things about equipment reviews and the use of camera equipment and photography techniques.

I think having guest interviews are also really fantastic.

Lightroom and photoshop are great tools. But i am not sure that it will work well in an audio podcast.

One podcast i found that has a good mix is the nikonian podcast. While i shoot canon, i still find it great. The news and the tips/interview are on alternative episodes. It sets my expectations before i listen to each show.

I appreciate your podcast most when you exchange thoughts on general, but important topics, like copyright, or current issues, pertaining to social media for example. There is a lot of technique tutorials out there, but discussions on ethics and stuff like that is far more difficult to find. And you guys present so different views, it is really great informing and learning experience. I would love to find more on that, in audio or written form.

Nice idea to get more out of the website – The web links are already great but I for one would enjoy reading technical articles here.

For what it’s worth, I would be interested to read your take on the following ideas:

- regarding Post-Processing; When to stop? When is an image generally too saturated or too contrasty? A look at good sharpening technique, and the differences between sharpening for web and print etc.

- similarly, Managing Colour : Calibration and Profiling; why, how and does it really matter?

- SLR vs Rangefinder vs TLR. A look at different camera ‘styles’ and how they change shooting technique and outcomes.

- Autofocus. How it works and why anyone would turn it off (*horror*!)

- “Alternative” workflows; How do you deal with your images if you don’t have Aperture or Lightroom?

Great work on the podcast though, and good luck with this new project!

Cheers,
Rob
