As we hinted a few episodes back, we have the privilege of being joined by Brian Matiash to discuss his move to the Sony mirrorless system after over a decade shooting Canon dSLRs. We talked about his reasons, advantages and disadvantages of the mirrorless cameras in general and the Sony system in particular, the biggest challenges faced, shooting hybrid with Canon lenses, EVF technology, and much more. No mirror? No worries

 

Micro four thirds and other mirrorless systems have been on the market for many years, but recently the level of adoption of these once frowned-upon cameras has been very intense.

On this episode, we discuss why would a photographer want a mirrorless system when compared to the tried and tested quality of a dSLR. What are the advantages and disadvantages of the systems, and what is making them so attractive that professionals are now switching and using the mirrorless has their main camera?

In the discussion we also touch up on the history of the system, compare a few prices, and talk about the range of lenses available and the Electronic Viewfinders (EVF).

 

 

On the news, what about a newspaper without photos? French newspaper Libération published an issue with white space in place of images, in support of photography and photojournalists.

A few suggestions to improve your photography workflow

 

Many times, the expression workflow is thrown around when talking about photography, and it gained popularity since the expansion of digital photography, hence digital workflow, namely used associated handling the digital files, from capture to publication. In my personal opinion, I think workflow includes/should include also the steps before the capture, and this is something we have approached on this episode.

Since I don’t think there is such a thing as an inherently wrong workflow, and since this is a very individual process, instead of trying to preach on what you should do, we’ve decided to discuss our own workflow, and pass on a few tips that, we hope, will help to improve yours.

  • Steps before the shoot, including shoot planning
  • Backups “on the field”
  • Backups on return, and redundant backups
  • Importing images
  • Associating metadata
  • Presets
  • Flagging images and using smart collections
