The Value of Photography

If you listened to show number 85, you probably remember that we discussed South African photographer Greg Lumley’s offer to sell his one-off aerial panorama of Cape Town for $35000. After the show was released, Greg contacted us (you can read his response in the comments on the show page) so we invited him to join us for a discussion about his image and, more generally, the value of imagery and photography today.

News

In the news, we talked about the verdict in the Morel vs AFP case being upheld – that’s US$1.2M.  Still with copyrights, the appeals Court says streamlined copyright registration for collections is legal, and the Wikimedia Foundation is being naughty.

On Kickstarter there was a campaign for SnaPICam, a Raspberry Pi powered Touchscreen Digital Camera complete with interchangeable lenses – as of this writing, the funding was unsuccessful Sad smile

The Research labs at Microsoft have been busy, and they have published some results of adjusted Hyperlapse, and the results are very very interesting.

To finish off the news, we talked about Canon launching Irista, a free dropbox-like cloud storage service for photos.

Enjoy the show…

How much did you spend on photography in the past year?

We are trying to understand how the spending habits of our listeners in photography has evolved. As such, here is a new poll.

Piggy Bank

Photography is expensive. It was expensive when the main medium was film, and is expensive with digital.

Whether as a hobby or a more professional level, the constant requirements (the needs or wants) of investing in equipment upgrades, software, workshops, etc is a constant and not so small drain on the budgets.

So, to try to understand the photography spending habits of our listeners, here is a new poll.

Do not count your time, but everything else from equipment, software, books, workshops, …

Thanks for your help with this.

What’s your photography Budget for 2010?

2010 is here and well under way. Hopefully, you’ve invested some of your time on planning your photography projects and setting some goals for the year. If not, no worries, you’re still on time  you should really do at least some thinking.

And with planning and goals and all of this, the ubiquitous subject of budget should also be one of your considerations.

Are you planning to re-invest a percentage of your income on your hobby / business? Do you have a certain piece of gear that you’re planning to buy this year?

Let’s put in numbers. How much are you planning to spend this year on photography (gear, workshops, books, prints, etc.)?

Below are some options that I’m hoping cover the majority of our listeners. If not, feel free to use the comments and share some numbers.

Also, if there is something specific that you’re planning on getting, share with us. Hopefully, the results of this poll will provide for some good discussion on one of the following episodes of PhotoNetCast.

Here’s to a great photographic year!
